It all started Saturday afternoon at the Banjo Jim's open mic, which is a super chill mic, lots of good talent and good pizza next door. Sunday was football and hanging out in my apartment, until I hit the Fortune Cookie Lounge Open mic, about which the less said the better, I think. But this started my stretch of playing my new song "Hey Ryan" pretty much every day this week and making sure it gets stuck in the head of everyone who hears it. Hell, I've been hearing the chorus every day since Toronto, why should I have to suffer alone?

On Monday the podcast I did at Radio Dispatch came out. Here is the link: http://www.breakthruradio.com/index.php?show=12056 Also on this podcast was Jamie Kilstein and Allison Kilkenny. Awesome!

Monday night I was performing with KILL THE BAND at the 5th anniversary party for The Happiest Medium. Congrats to Karen and Stephen and everyone at Happiest Medium!!

Tuesday was Penny's! Wednesday was Grudge Match! Thursday was the Jen Perney feature at Lucky Jack's! Two shows into a three show run, with the last performance coming up this Sunday Aug 8th, I feel like I am finally able to digest most of it. It's been one of the most rewarding, gut-wrenching, difficult, frustrating, exhilarating experiences I've ever had.

I'm not an actor. I don't act, I've never acted, I've never taken acting classes, and only got about 15 pages into Stanislavski's "An Actor Prepares". I agreed to do Buckle Up because I believe in Natalie and her vision and I believe the fine cast and crew she'd assembled and I wanted to be a part of this so bad for multiple, complex reasons that I would have done anything. But I watched in horror as the role expanded, and there were more lines for me to learn, and more stage time, all of which I just saw as more opportunities to fuck up. And the material! Terrific, passionate writing, but very difficult subject matter.

Under the patient hand of JP Schuffman (our brilliant director), however, I settled in to the role, became more confident in my abilities and now have turned out two awesome performances in a row. It's thrilling, really, to be a part of something that is so important to a good friend of mine and now, to all of us. It's been an honor and a privilege and I hope you can all make the last show. It's going to blow you away.

Get your tickets online now! They will go fast!!

https://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?showcode=BUC0

Director / Co-Producer: JP Schuffman
Written by and starring: Natalie Underwood
Featuring: Joe Yoga and John Murdock
Lights and Stage Management: Brian "Beezy" Douglas
Props, Costumes, and Backstage Extraordinaire: Jen Perney
Photography: Daniel Michael Rockdale
Choreography: Kimberly Kreps (Canceled due to Natalie's illness)

"While watching this play you feel the pain of everyone involved. It’s hard to tell who the villain or victim is. In the end we see that everyone is flawed. A series of bad decisions lead to everyone's life being turned upside down and changed forever. The true moral of the story as well as the hero of the tale is Redemption, how scared Cassie overcomes everything and everyone. Redemption in this performance is best stated, I am what I am from what I was but I am not what I was before, not now and not ever. If you have any doubts about forgiveness, love, hope, and salvation then Buckle Up is the show for you. This show will make you believe that the human heart has no limits and salvation comes in many forms." - Calvin Roy

Life Out East Tracklist

1. I'd been wanting to get some work done on the album but figured I would have a better chance of getting some quality work in by crashing out and waking up around 9 or 10 and getting right to work rather than trying to force myself to stay up until 5, working (lord how times have changed). So I went for a walk and ended up having a late night dinner at Shake Shack's new 8th ave / Times Square location.

A line 35 deep was certainly not something I was expecting around ten pm, but it moved pretty fast. It was maybe a seven or eight minute wait. When you place your order they give you something that looks like a remote control that buzzles and shakes and lights up when your food is ready. Interesting. My food came fairly quickly as well, which was nice.

I've been to the Shake Shack in Madison Square park a few times but I'm not one of these obsessives. I don't really buy into the whole "experience"... . I think they're perfectly good burgers but there are countless burgers just as good or better out there that I DON'T have to wait an hour for.

So, a food review: The Shack Burger: very tender beef, awesome soft and tasty bun, (not enough Shack Sauce though) and at 4.75 about the same price as a Double Whopper. A bit small. I imagine a double is the way to go. And as I remember it, a perfectly fine burger, safely on the good side of the bell curve.

$2.75 gets you a small, dry, fairly nasty serving of fries (might as well just spend another two bucks and get another burger). I was really surprised. The fries were like cardboard. Tasteless.

The "Fair Shake" (Vanilla and Coffee) might just be the best milkshake in the city. That's hyperbole, sure, but it's fresh on my mind. It's a damn good milkshake. Well worth the $5.25 or whatever.

_

And I did get a chunk of work on my album done. In fact, mixed three, recorded new vocals for one and recorded one in its entirety that I have been trying to nail for weeks now. Feeling real good about shit. i have two more to record and then I will probably cut three. Wish me luck!!!

off to band camp

It's been a pretty thrilling weekend. Got to see one of the best bands working today, Hallelujah the Hills, at Union Hall on Friday night. They're starting a tour that's going to include dates with Titus Andronicus. They played some new material that sounded lovely and a bunch of my favorites, including Effie and then shocked the hell out of me by playing "To All My Scientist Colleagues", which was an awesome surprise.

Even better news!! You can now buy my last album "The Dreamless Sea" on bandcamp.com. Sure... you can get it for free from most of my friends or on the internet (if you know where to look...) but at $6 bucks, or 50 cents a song, you might as well just buy it.

.

Grudge Match: Music vs. Comedy (Wed. It has a high octave C (3rd string) and a low octave on the A (1st string). The unique setup combined with the mahogany woods gives it a rich, full, very bizarre sound. There are moments when it sounds like a low-endy mandolin (i want to say baritone mandolin but I don't know if that's musically correct). I've had it for a week and am getting a lot of cool chord progressions out of it. Not a lot of lyrics though. For example:

Lots of little half-songs or parts-of songs and melodies. But I've done pretty well adapting to the strange tuning (the E string, for example, is lower in pitch than the G string, even though it's higher on up the fretboard) and have been doing some subway and street jamming... and have already added it to two songs that I just finished up for Life Out East (my new album).

Tulsa

The last band I was in before I "went solo" (which stint included getting in TWO bands, but that's not important. The motivation is a nice before/after line for me) was a band called Noisebin, which featured myself on bass, the amazing Jenny Christmas on guitar, and "Hands" Danly on drums. We were a great band and had a nice little run, but tensions and visions were disparate and we split the band up before we started hating each other.
I kept a few of the songs though, and this one, based off of one of Jenny's chord progressions (C-F waltz) is one of my favorites. She started doing the C-F thing in practice, I followed her and started improvising some melodies on top of it. I had an idea for the chorus and the rest is history.

No, I've never been to Tulsa. I guess it's a bit much to expect the activity of listening to music on headphones while staring at a computer screen to have any social aspect.

-

dangers of being a sub

all hate is is really disappointment in the moment.

the discovery that you loved someone who was a hypocrite leads to something more closely associated with self-hate than other-hate.

this is a vicious cycle.

but i know it will most likely end up being like how I view my abusive ex-fiance. anger, followed by hate, followed by sadness, followed by apathy, followed by humor. the humor pokes its head out every now and again, only to be dominated by the current (or next) emotion.

BUZZ: there is a danger to being a sub/bottom. you tend to attract people who really enjoy belittling other people.

the fuck is wrong with me? my antennae used to be so better at picking shit like that up.

Live From Times Square, It's BROCKTUNE STUDIOS!

THE LIST: Well when you put it like that there's not much else to say. She left two days after all this shit was over. When you say it like that it's almost as if we spent no time nowhere, thinking about nothing right then. But I went with her then because I was out of cigarettes and it was late. Outside it was cold and wet, like a poet. We stepped onto the road, with the billboards and the wild grass - new york city - and I slipped - and it crossed my mind. - next comes the scene on the couch. So set it. The one thing about the place was that because of WHERE it was sometimes if the atmosphere was just a little too complex for whatever reason only a few of the commercial free stations would come in. And the best one was this bossa nova, salsa, samba, and cha-cha-cha. So I ended up listening to it a lot but, no, I don't think I ever got much more out of it than just enjoying it when it was on - but the point is is that because it was so nuts out, it was one of those nights and it was on. She was sleeping all spread out on the sofabed, and when I looked over there and realized how late it was a muted trumpet did a lilting solo. - but where was I? man - it became some weird DIY thing with her where everyday items, if they'd really kind of BEEN everyday, know what I'm saying - everyday items, then they wore their years of service on their sleeve - almost on purpose. - ingrained - you know the drill. the epic show of skill. you know the drill. the heroic act of will - On the heels of that...sign came down from the top today, saying More Quit - the body wants more quit - the world smells the fear on me smells it as I walk down the street, sees it on my face, hears it in my bass - greed is denial, already - new beginnings - love - where do the locked doors in the subway lead? - I borrowed the idea from an old friend. as it started to always be something, I made a case for stalling - I made a case for walking. When I left, I closed my eyes and stepped and looked amazed, and I, brash with the rest of them, trusted my stuff and I absolutely had to and take couches and floors where I could see. start with a wall or a door with a sign on it - "I was interviewing this guy - I didn't like his confrontational style" - band - bush - new and improved- why do I even feel compelled to write about them? I don't want to write about them - how the strings and my fingers feel familiar - how there is safety in the random - typos - I REMEMBER DRIVING THE VAN HIGH - the typos most checked - how can I get away with writing about relationships when I know nothing about them? - think of it as kind of an inside running joke. I had just estinguished the cigarette when he stopped talking on the answering machine. It didn't go straight out with the beep but it was pretty damn close. Outside the window the construction going on across the street could still be heard, but it wasn't overwhelming the brand new indie rock record I'd received through someone who had been reading the site where I do book reviews. - we were searched for - longed for - googled - no doubt by the waiting, hyperactive, sedentary public that was tuning in - my instincts don't say a lot these days - monolith - cognition ignition decision - my boss punched a wall - 2005= judgement! - left alone in the woods - if only, if only - irrevocably, irrevocably, irrevocably - I can't figure out if I over reacted or not - probably - bonus thrity dollar gift card - my life is like a washing machine on sale - no interest for twelve months - i was listening to the rain, I was hearing something else - METS SEVEN PITTSBURGH ZERO - Bobby Jones? - Searching for a place to have a moment. the old knife shop had been there for years but is now a bank. If I stop in the middle of the sidewalk is it that I think that place should be here or am I stunned because no one else has stopped? There's more to the street than the gutter. everything was cool while we were just sitting there. it wasn't until the crowd swelled with the people who lived here now... people who seven eight years ago would have been over the bridge or under the river - but now it was safe enough for them. they'd heard enough; me, I'd had enough. But it wasn't going to end there, or outside as I puked up the one bite of pannini I'd taken off my friend Adam. WHO'S A SLEEPER? NOT FUCKING ME! I REMEMEBER EIGHTH AVE TRAFFIC - I want to write about non-localized consciousness - ammunition - disclaiming - so much of this has come from somewhere else - who will be there to go through all of my tapes, all of my papers, all of my wasted hours and find them worthy? - who must see me as worthy before then? her? - oh poor little heart, will he never learn? - so... my weekends are bullshit and nothing sounds good on the radio / but it's voices and I can take it but it's the commercials - the relentless commercials trying to sell me shit. try and sell me cigarettes and maybe I won't feel so compelled to have them in my life - Warm. What are yours - none of us would ever want to know anyone that way - all the stars in the sky tried - Percy - all the kids we never had sighed - all the groups I never sang with slide - some may try for number two - it was just one of those things, you know. we got into waiting for people, we kept drinking, talked about music and cigarettes and windows. I remember staring at the ceiling thinking, with a hand on my dead shoulder, that these were the kinds of things that songs were made of. especially with all the crying on the train afterwards and such. damn. SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS I REALIZED THAT I WAS TOO DRUNK TO PLAY THE GUITAR - not that anyone - give me one reason to stay here, and I'll turn right back around - you've got to make me change my mind - I'm glad you put on Jawbreaker - no shoes - i'd gone home to change at some point, i only wish the world had changed with me - blah - well anyways the point is is that we never made it to the bar, never made it to the show, we kissed on the couch in the corner, i'd had my lap sat in, went for a beer run, let the night pass. something about a certain smell and a certain window that it was hoped this smell would pass through. we were in cleveland by this point, we had a bag or two of blow left and we'd been on the run from whatever it was for some time now. shrubs and why can't I type that. and ashtray. sure that too. and your friend Bob and Hugh's girlfriend and mugshots and cornerstone mirrors and the folding tables out front. this is summer to me, apparently. that and sweat. and white clothes. and torment and pass it did. neighbors complained eventually, and can you blame them. there were whole cities at stake. so the three of us stood out in the hall for what seemed, at least to my (I look out as the wind picks up. the sky goes light and tan. all my thoughts in order, and I'm yawnin and I wasn't meant to fly nor was I meant to fill these pages nor leave this windowsill empty) drunk self, as a long time. so I went back in for her (all the yous in these songs used to be someone else. now they're you) and saw them talking. it couldn't have been that long, but things were growing as it were. I thought of the hallway I just left and wondered if it was whispering thing to me, right now, and not being able to see or feel or hear my existence nonetheless knew me so well that it spoke to me only assuming I'd be there. but I wasn't.... I was lingering... I was keeping a direct line from my mind into each eye until they were standing right next to each other. now sure they know each other and it might have just been my drunk brain filling in the gaps like eyes do automatically. those eyes. but these things are true: we were waiting for people who didn't seem to be coming. I could not blame anybody as that was the way of the world and the way of the city I'd chosen, part of the tradeoff from the value system that I inserted myself into. if one can insert oneself into something that china-dollish. hunker down. think. no no no you've got it all wrong, and you've got ME all wrong in the process. It's not lying on the couch, it's called vizualization. that sent my mind racing as I cherry picked things to help this make sense: step one. look at your hand, I mean really look at it. step two. stare at a penny for fifteen minutes. what "comes" to "mind"? them slow away them deep in shit them lost on the roof with a panorama and a poster for the film and them without anything to hold in their restless hands. them disappearing into rooms. them counting for minutes and minutes at a time. but it made no sense with everything else. so I said, "tell me wall" I said this though I was still inside, tell me hallway what's the word from out there? what the hell are the stairs looking up at? wha?? "they're making out" even though that was not true. not the biggest lie, but a lie nonetheless. patterns appeared where there were none but I don't feel upset about that. I'd rather be overzealous at times in seeking out and training myself to recognize patters than god forbid let that ability slip even a little. after that it's a world of fast dizzy inebriated emotion, no text messages, hurting on the platform, staring into space on the train, wiping my eyes as I left. nothing to tell me otherwise the next day. so without much else to do I went on with my life. - independent arists - Accumulating a lot of past. What a relief! as the long wet night climbs its way to me. Usually when I am at home I leave iTunes on shuffle, and when I am at work I usually listen to albums all the way through. I guess it has something to do with the fact that when I'm at work, I know I'm going to be sitting at my desk for an extended period of time and am comfortable with committing to a whole album, whereas if I'm at home I want to maintain the illusion that I could at any moment pop up and do real work, or x-out the itunes to work on some music or whatever. Don't want to do this if I'm halfway through Animals or Collective Psychosis Begone. Right?

Well I have the first Tapes and Tapes record on my work iTunes, but because I never really got grabbed by it and because I rarely shuffle at work, I am quite unfamiliar with most of the tracks by now. But for whatever reason, songs from it have kept coming up on shuffle today and I keep thinking they're something else. Is this Babyshambles? Is this one of the Frank Black b-sides I don't know all that well? Is this from that weird Mike Watt solo album?

Besides making me think Oh God, another band that apes its influences instead of being, you know, influenced by them, it also made me acknowledge that there are a few pretty good songs on here... well... probably more accurately, a few good hooks, a good chorus... the songs don't really do it for me, but there are some redeeming qualities. It's not going to make me want to listen to the whole album, or go see a show, but it might make me reluctant to hit the FWD button when it shows up on shuffle.

---

Anyway, I think I have solved the whole "Joe Yoga is not signed, nor known" problem... I will keep you all updated. It’s called Stain Bar- please visit them @ http://www.stainbar.com/ or just go down to 766 Grand Street in Brooklyn (right off the L train at the Grand St stop). It’s artist owned & run by Caroline and Craig who also play in a cool band called Tin Veil. The wide main bar area has about seven or eight couches, fantastic art all over the wall, notebooks you can write in, and the bar itself has a great selection of (reasonably priced) NY beers and wine. Being Labor Day weekend (and the night of the Sonic Youth show at McCarren Pool) it was a little slow, but the vibe of the place was undeniable. Plus they have a nice-sized outdoor garden with tables and an enormous metal sculpture of a quarter (as in 25 cents) that has to be seen to believed.

I played there this past Saturday (the 30th) and they gave me the whole night. I did two sets (17 songs) and just had a blast, as did everyone who came out. I recorded the thing so live tracks should be up in a few days when I get my act together. I’ve listened to it to extract the setlist (since I never actually have a setlist, just a bunch of songs on a piece of paper that have been working for me lately, then I choose from them) and there are some great versions of these so I’m psyched to get them up here for yous.

By the way, if you haven’t yet, go check out my youtube videos at www.youtube.com/goyogago

1st Set
Fugitive
Think to Knock
Queen Bee
You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory (Johnny Thunders cover)
Tulsa
The I Like You Song
Pretty Eyes (Silver Jews cover)
Dumb Luck

2nd Set
Small Hands
The World Without Us
Big Dumb River
Urban Planning
Panic Attack
Apartment Story (The National cover)
Gone
Dinosaur
Humor

Yoga @ Don Pedro 8/23

AWESOMENESS is the word for Don Pedro. Well, it was OK. There were some technical problems early on, which was fine except for the fact that they all happened during Alabaster's set. His manager cursed out our very stressed-out host Gary, though I don't think he heard, or at least acted like he didn't care.
During all of this I was hanging out with the great Tim Warner over by one end of the stage. He and I were bonding over the fact that we've both quit cigarettes. I was kind of worried about him because the words "Joe Biden" kept leaping out of his mouth. I wasn't sure if it was on purpose or if like me he'd just been watching too much C-Span.
So yeah, I had lots of other things on my mind, such as the BBQ we were heading to afterwards, whether my harmonica rack would betray me again (it did, the bastard!), poverty, a looming McCain presidency and the collapse of social order. Luckily it was my spot soon. I played:

Panic Attack
What Life Feels Life
Urban Planning (god-damn harmonica rack fucked me!)
Humor

Anyway it was an all right gig, lots of people there for themselves, but got a few nods on my way out, even from Mr. Fury himself. Draw sucked but the place is way the fuck out in the middle of nowheres, across from a huge conglomeration of projects. I wonder if places like these have kind of overextended the hipster brand... a few places, like Goodbye Blue Monday, will probably survive. I have my doubts about DP's though.

The night ended @ the Brooklyn Boy's pad for a BBQ - with drunken Bohemian Rhapsody, a fifth of Tequilla, grilled chicken, hot dogs, and burgers, and a ride home. Can't ask for much more than that.

Mr. Phelps didn't get the memo.

It's been a pretty good week for Michael Phelps. Fifteen medals, ten of which were gold, he set a new world record every time he entered the pool, he got to make out with that hot Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice, and now that the olympics are over he gets to go back to the states and immerse himself in corporate money via endorsements!

Now, I don't have a lot of respect for famous people who whore their visages out to corporations to become the face of a certain product, but I will give the person some slack if they actually like the product (or if they need the money, but that's another story for another time).

Everyone's heard about Michael Phelp's legendary diet... 57,000 calories a day I think. Alls the guy does is eat, sleep, fuck Australians, and swim. Guy eats a box of Frosted Flakes every morning. Motherfucker is not going to hide that shit. Boy loves the sugar. So when Phelps won his seventeenth medal, American corporations smelled blood in the water. Good looking guy, fifteen minutes of fame, Olympics = America, fuck yeah! Get this kid to sign his face over so we can put it on our product.

Naturally, Wheaties, the Breakfast of Champions, (because they say so, apparently) wants the guy to whore himself out so GM can sell boxes of cereal. But wait! Phelps signs with Kellogg instead; he wants to endorse Frosted Flakes because GASP - he actaully eats that shit and loves it! Imagine that. Now Wheaties throws a hissy fit and gets all these nutrition "experts" to bash him in the media:

"I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian," nutritionist Rebecca Solomon of Mount Sinai Medical Center told the NY Daily News http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/2008olympics/2008/08/19/2008-08-19_breakfast_of_a_champion_frosted_flakes_p.html

O RLY??? You wouldn't? Well guess what, Bex, I got someone who disagrees with you, he's called PHELPS THE DESTROYER, and he's got seventeen gold medals and a mouthful of Australian Swimmer pussy that says you're wrong.

Hey Phelps, you missed the memo! You're not supposed to endorse products that you LIKE, dumbass. What the fuck? Olympic champions endorse WHEATIES. Did you miss that while facebooking on your ipod for the last eight years??

Do what you're supposed to do! Or do a little good old-fashioned American whoring and go straight for the money! Like Rachel Ray, who plasters her Long Island-esque face all over Dunkin Donuts commercials yet screams at on-set interns to go get her Starbucks coffee while she's filming the god damn Dunkin Donuts commercial. What? You don't have enough money from your cookbook and your goddamn tv show, you have to LIE about how much you like Dunkin Donuts so they'll give you MORE money?? Fucking sad.

Joe Yoga live @ God Tastes Like Chicken (setlist)

I played last night (8/21/2008) at God Tastes Like Chicken @ Under St. Mark's Theatre, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite places of all time. This is a great little venue on Attorney and E Houston; it's down the street from the old Coach rehearsal space, and one of the places I would end up before or after practice for a beer. Three dollar PBR drafts... not bad.

Overall it was a success. It was overwhelming to see so many people there, including some of my very favorite people in the entire world. With the crowd from the band that went on after me, there were probably close to 40 people in the room. If not more. The room was full! There were some problems with the monitors at the beginning and I had some nerves but settled in nicely and ended up doing a great set.

I can't thank everyone who came enough, and those who wanted to come but couldn't or didn't for whatever reason. You all know who you are and I'm forever indebted to you for your love and support.

Now, since I am very unprofessional and don't use a setlist, and I forgot to record the show, I don't know what exactly the setlist was. But it went something like this:

Everything's Ahead of Us Now
Panic Attack
Small Hands
(i know those were the first three... here's where things get fuzzy, order-wise)
Hey Indigo
The Outer Limits
Shoulda Coulda (w/Nick Courage - part of the http://www.amutualrespect.org/ braintrust)
Are You Tired of Me My Darling
Burning Yr Bridges

(i know these were the last two)
Urban Planning
Humor

No recordings exist, but there are a bunch of pictures out there that I have to hunt down.

also - i have a new website! thanks to Marsha for helping me set it up... it's still in its nascent stages but will be GRAND!!!! -

http://www.goyogago.com/

Setlist - Live @ Europa 7/16/2008

I have recordings from this... don't know how good they are since I haven't gone through them yet but I'm psyched even at the possibility that they may be good.
